My wife and I visited the charming, picturesque Old Town of Ljubljana, Slovenia, in late May/early June 2024. We thought this city was one of the most underrated places we had visited.

During our week in the city, we often heard North American, German, and Italian tourists, but rarely UK accents.

Don’t worry about translation tools. Everyone here speaks English.

The photograph above shows the Ljubljanica River, which winds its way through this beautiful city.

We noticed a distinct lack of British tourists in Ljubljana. It seems that travellers from the UK may not yet have discovered this very pretty and friendly city.

I am particularly eager to introduce UK tourists and others who may not be familiar with Ljubljana Old Town. If you do visit, I am confident you will not be disappointed.

An Introduction to Ljubljana Old Town

The two-minute video introduces Prešeren Square, also called Prešernov trg. Depending on where you’re staying, this may be your first chance to explore the old town. We stayed at the Eurostars uHotel on Miklošičeva cesta, a two-minute walk away.

I have no affiliation with the Eurostars uHotel, but I recommend it for its excellent service.

The Prešeren Monument in Ljubljana, Prešernov spomenik in Slovene, commemorates the Slovene national poet France Prešeren.

The building behind the monument is the Central Pharmacy in Ljubljana.

Kongresni trg square

This square held some fantastic surprises. The centre of the square is occupied by the leafy Zvezda park.

Around this park are the splendid buildings of the University of Ljubljana, the Slovenian Philharmonic and the Slovenian School Museum.

Slovenes Take Pride in Their Capital

Ljubljana is clean and tidy. Recycling bins are everywhere, and I often saw them being used.

A bit of Yugonostalgia?

I came across the Slovenian-Serbian Club at Trubarjeva cesta 19, close to Ljubljana old town.

According to an online article on the Novice Svet 24 website, the bookshop/club also includes an antique shop.

The bookshop owner, Dušan Cunjak, says there is great interest in Serbo-Croatian literature, especially among philosophers, economists, and doctors.

Ljubljana old town features a lot of graffiti, as seen in the photo of the Slovenian-Serbian Club. This was our only minor disappointment. Opinions on graffiti are divided: some, including the official Visit Ljubljana website, enjoy it, though it remains illegal. Personally, I found it a small annoyance and encourage you not to let it affect your visit.

Ljubljana’s Love Bridge

Ljubljana’s love bridge is called the Butchers’ Bridge.

Numerous couples have symbolically padlocked their love here and thrown the keys into the Ljubljanica, which runs beneath.

The love padlocks attached to the bridge’s railings are one of Ljubljana’s many romantic stories.

Ljubljana Castle

Ljubljana Castle has stood above the city for about 900 years. The views of Ljubljana old town and the mountains are beautiful. Take the funicular up to the castle or enjoy a 15-minute walk.

Our Thoughts About Ljubljana Old Town

Ljubljana is a hidden gem. If you are looking for a destination with a relaxed atmosphere, friendly hosts, and excellent cuisine, then look no further. Ljubljana Old Town is the place for you.

We flew EasyJet from Gatwick with a flight time of just over two hours. EasyJet and BA also fly to Ljubljana from other London airports. We used EasyJet’s hotel service and loved our chosen hotel.
