The Right-Hand Drive Advantage

While UK drivers complain about ULEZ, traffic, and upkeep, for a soldier in Ukraine, that same vehicle is a vital lifeline, not just a mode of transport.

I’ve been following the vital work of Car For Ukraine, an organisation dedicated to sourcing and preparing vehicles for the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). If you have an older 4×4, pickup, or van sitting on your driveway, it could soon be playing a vital role in saving lives.

The British Advantage: Why Right-Hand Drive Matters

It might come as a surprise, but UK vehicles have a unique tactical advantage on the Ukrainian battlefield. Because Ukraine is a left-hand drive market, Russian snipers and drone operators instinctively aim at the left side of a vehicle, expecting to hit the driver.

When they target a British right-hand drive (RHD) car, they often hit an empty seat. This “tactical confusion” has already saved numerous Ukrainian drivers from direct hits. This makes our UK-sourced vehicles, even those that might be considered “past their prime” by British standards, highly prized assets for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

From Your UK (or EU) Driveway to the Front Line

Your EU car will also save lives in Ukraine

The journey of a donated car is a testament to international solidarity. Here is how the process works:

  1. Donation & Transit: Vehicles are often driven from the UK and EU to Ukraine by a network of dedicated volunteers. These cars are delivered in their original state to workshops within Ukraine.
  2. Local Expertise: Once in Ukraine, the cars are serviced and fitted with 8mm to 10mm steel armour plates around vital areas like the engine, radiator, and the cabin (protecting the head, neck, and torso of the occupants).
  3. Supporting the Economy: By using Ukrainian workshops, the initiative provides essential jobs for local mechanics and engineers, ensuring the money stays within the country to support its resilience.
  4. Deployment: These “battle-ready” trucks are then handed directly to units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for medical evacuations, troop transport, and logistics.

The “Easter Pysanky Trucks” Campaign

At the moment, there is a major push through the Easter Pysanky Trucks 2026 campaign. This fundraiser is being championed by several prominent YouTubers in the Ukraine-support community, including Greg Terry, Professor Gerdes Explains, and Jonathan Pearce of the ATP Geopolitics YouTube channel. The links to these YouTubers are at the bottom of this post.

The “Pysanky” (traditional Ukrainian Easter egg) branding symbolises hope and rebirth. The goal is to raise funds and source a new fleet of armoured pickups (like the Toyota Hilux or Mitsubishi L200) to bolster the mobility of Ukrainian units. For those who follow these creators, this is a fantastic way to turn digital support into tangible, life-saving equipment.

How You Can Help (Even with “Non-Compliant” Cars)

Ukraine isn’t looking for the latest gadgets; they need mechanical reliability and 4×4 capability. If your car has failed a UK or EU emissions test or is no longer economical to run due to ULEZ or similar schemes, it is still a perfect candidate for donation.

  • Donate a Vehicle: If you have a 4×4, pickup, or van (ideally 2004 or newer), you can contact Car For Ukraine via their Vehicle Donation page to start the process.
  • Fundraise: The cost to armour and service a truck is approximately €11,000. Every donation helps cover the logistics and the steel plates that keep soldiers safe.
  • Spread the Word: Share this post with your local car clubs, business networks or farmers in your community.

Your old car might have reached the end of its journey on British or other European roads, but it could be just beginning its most important mission yet.
