Worthing Symphony Orchestra

John Gibbons, Conductor of the Worthing Symphony Orchestra (WSO), speaking to us before the performance of Elgar’s Symphony No. 1

A big shout-out to the Worthing Symphony Orchestra’s last performance of their 2022 – 2023 season at the Assembly Hall in Worthing.

On Sunday, 23rd April 2023, my wife and I attended this concert and enjoyed the programme enormously. The works performed were:

  • A Sussex Overture by Harold Whibley
  • Coronation March – “Crown Imperial” by Sir William Walton
  • Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43 by Sergei Rachmaninoff. Piano soloist: Arta Arnicane
  • Symphony No. 1 in A flat Major, Op. 55 by Sir Edward Elgar

Our thoughts about this concert echoed opinions of what we heard from other concert-goers after the performance. It was an electrifying and polished performance, as good as any we had heard.

We were in the stalls, seated to the left and a little closer to the stage than we would have liked, yet the orchestral sound felt very spatial. We were amazed at how well we could hear the individual instrument families.

It was our first time attending one of Worthing Symphony Orchestra’s performances, and we will be back for more.
