The Tarring Wassail in 2023
On Thursday 5th of January 2023 at 8pm, the ancient custom of wassailing took place in Tarring Village, Worthing.
The weather was dry and perfect for this annual event. As in previous years, the Sompting Village Morris splendidly provided the mainstay of The Wassail torchlit parade along the High Street in Tarring. Many residents of Tarring and Worthing turned out to enjoy this ever popular and spectacular event.
About Wassailing
This medieval ritual of wassailing (especially popular in the cider producing regions of England) involves short bursts of noise and singing, thus ensuring a good cider apple harvest the following year.
Tarring Wassail in 2023
The procession started at the northern end of the High Street and proceeded down to the Parsonage Restaurant. The parade then worked its way back up to the Vine Pub in the High Street, where a Wassail ceremony took place by an apple tree in the pub garden.
