Many pro-Ukraine English-language websites highlight volunteers in Ukraine but mainly focus on those from English-speaking countries, giving little attention to Ukrainians doing vital humanitarian work.

Kharkiv’s Power Infrastructure Has Been Destroyed

Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, had a pre-war population of 1.419 million. Located in northeastern Ukraine, just 30 kilometres (19 miles) from the Russian border, it has lost its power infrastructure due to heavy bombing, leaving most residents without electricity.

Polina, a fellow NAFO fella, raises funds for humanitarian supplies—food, clothing, and medicines—for Kharkiv residents. She also featured fundraisers for other Ukrainian organisations.

Polina’s fundraising accounts are legitimate. On her X account, she is followed by several high-profile pro-Ukraine accounts, including Jake Broe, Harley EOD, and Rebekah Maciorowski.

Did you know? Polina Shumakova is also an active 23-year-old competitive table tennis player who has achieved notable success in various tournaments, including winning a bronze medal with her team at the Ukrainian Championship in March 2025. She has also won a local tournament with her team in December 2023.

Toonie Tuesdays are social media-driven fundraising efforts, often on X (Twitter), where people donate the equivalent of a “toonie” (a Canadian $2 coin). This symbolises a small gift to support Ukrainian causes, particularly defenders and humanitarian aid, spotlighting a vetted organisation each Tuesday to rally support and raise funds for vital supplies like vehicles and medical equipment.
