I miss my Polish food in Worthing. But look what I found at Lidl in Shoreham-by-Sea in West Sussex!

Lidl Polish Food Event from Thursday 25 January 2024

* The Poppy Seed Crumble Cake is based on a German recipe, known as Mohnkuchen although there are Polish versions of this cake too.

There is a Lidl in Worthing town centre. It’s a slightly smaller shop, so not all the products I purchased may be available there. Shoreham-by-Sea is only a short drive from my home in Worthing.

Lidl’s Flavour of the Week – Central and Eastern Europe

At the moment it’s Lidl’s Flavour of the Week – Central and Eastern Europe, which started on Thursday 25 January 2024.

Review – Kuljanka Vegetable Salad – Classic

The wife and I sampled this vegetable salad, which was a lunchtime disappointment as we both agreed it was a watery mush with a disappointing taste.

Ingredients: White cabbage, carrots, gherkins, onions in water and spirit vinegar.

Cost: £1.99 for a 820g pot.

Country of Origin: Not specified.

Our verdict: 2 out of 5.

Review – Poppy Seed Crumble Cake

We were disappointed with the Poppy Seed Crumble Cake, which we had for evening dessert on 26 January.

My wife has baked this German cake numerous times and her excellent home-made version bears no resemblance to the Lidl version. In our tasting session, the poppy seed mixture was soggy in texture and had little taste. The crumble layer was thin and lacked taste, as did the crust. It’s possible that freezing may not be the best treatment for such a cake.

Price and weight: £3.99. 1.25kg.

Country of Origin: Not specified.

Our verdict: 2 out of 5.

Review – Mieszanka Czekoladowa

Here is a list of flavours we found in the Wedel chocolate sweets:

Pierrot with pieces of nuts. Bajeczny with nuts and wafers. Kokosek with coconut. Toffik toffee taste. Mocca with coffee.

We were impressed with these chocolates. We have tasted other chocolate sweets from Poland that we would rate higher in richness of taste. Nevertheless, we enjoyed this box of chocolates.

Price and weight: £3.75. 321g.

Country of origin: Poland.

Our verdict: 4 out of 5.

Review – Dulano 2 Masurian Sausages

We’ve just tasted these sausages and loved them. It takes a little effort to remove the skins before eating but that’s the case with a lot of Polish sausages. I used a very sharp paring knife for this. We found these sausages to be mild and smoky.

Price and weight: £2.99. 520g.

Country of origin: Poland – made with EU pork.

Our verdict: 5 out of 5.

Review – Kuljanka Silesian Sausages

Updated Monday 29 January. We found these sausages far too salty. This may have masked what might have been tasty sausages. I air-fried them at 200 degrees Celsius for 8 minutes. I cut 1cm off each end as I wanted some of the fat to drip out, which it did. Some might frown at this, but after several days of eating these high-fat foods, We needed to minimise the fat intake.

Price and weight: £3.49. 600g. 6 thick sausages in the pack.

Country of origin: Not specified.

Our verdict: 3 out of 5.

Review – Kuljanka Potato Dumplings

Updated 4 February 2024. Very impressive and we loved them. The meat filling was nicely seasoned while the potato outer was soft and tasty. Absolutely delicious.

Price and weight: £2.49. 1kg.

Country of origin: Poland.

Our verdict: 5 out of 5.

I feel that Lidl may be a reasonable choice for some Polish food. If you are lucky enough to live in an area with Polish deli shops (at the time of writing Worthing has none), that is where you will get the best quality. When we lived in London, we only bought food in Polish delis, and the quality was consistently very good.
